I DO BELIEVE. I DON'T BELIEVE. AND THE GRAY MATTER IN BETWEEN.
PART ONE: GHOSTS (with Jason Webley)
4/10/07

I do believe in ghosts. I do I do I do. I do believe in UFO’s. I do. I do not. I do not believe in heaven and hell. I do? I do not. I definitely do not. Wait, maybe I do. I do believe in extraterrestrial beings. I do believe in life after death. I do believe in ghosts. I do believe in UFO’s. I do. I do not. I do. I do not.
Okay, this is insanity. Yes. That is 100% for sure. And over the next four weeks, I will be doing an equally insane series. I do believe, I don’t believe, and the gray matter in between.
We as a culture agree that witches do not fly around on broomsticks. We agree that there is no Santa Claus. No Easter Bunny. No Tooth Fairy. No singing and dancing snowmen. No Leprechauns. No wizards. No Boogey Men. No furry monsters under the bed. But then, there are the questionables. We want to believe its possible that aliens visit planet Earth. We want to believe in Big Foot, in Champ the lake monster, in sea monsters, in signs, in ESP, in tarot cards, in telekinetic powers. Some part of that wonder and unadulterated belief in the inexplicable remains after we grow up. And I for one think it’s with good reason.
Was it not just a few months ago that a dozen United Airlines employees reported seeing a flying disc over Chicago O’Hare airport? I can’t believe that these are all complete psychokooks. These are regular people with jobs.

In this episode, I talk with Jason Webley, the Seattle-based cult icon singer /songwriter /nomad /screaming accordion player, before a show he played at the Dreamaway Lodge in Becket on April Fools Day. Long ago, at a different concert, I remember Jason telling a whopper-doozer ghost story, and I had to hear it again. It’s not a made up ghost story, it was completely real. At least in Jason’s mind. No, I don’t have scientific proof it actually happened. But Jason isn’t a psychokook either. At least I didn’t get that impression.
My question is, if there are no ghosts, no UFO’s, no alien abductions why would so many people claim to witness such things? Do humans just love lying? Do we just love telling tall tales? Yes. No. Well, maybe. I mean, scientifically speaking, yes, we are compulsive liars. And compulsive believers. And everything in between.

glad I was up here today,
that was really good.
nothing against your other shows,
but that was easily the best i've heard.
production, sound, content, narration etc.
almost perfect.
not sure i'd hit the seder
but i can't believe i've never
been to that lodge.
dylan? damn.
